Martin Kane has one of the most instantly recognisable private worlds...

It is Kane's palette that brings to mind De Chirico or Hopper. Strong on ochres and subdued reds, the counter balance between the shadowed 'heavy' and the illuminated 'light' areas create an effective spatial quality. The introduction of a figure, often solitary and rarely more than two, introduce the idea of a narrative not relieved by the title of the work which frequently suggests a metaphysical interpretation.

These are cerebral paintings, plotted with geometric precision, obeying classical disciplines, crafted with painstaking skills... their curiously poetic pessimism and sense of something about to happen have the poetic aspiration of Hopper's great American townscapes.
